Context

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) describes a set of principles and practices designed to promote equality of opportunity and treatment amongst different demographic groups in the workplace and across society. Over the past decade, many businesses have adopted Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies or engaged in EDI schemes intended to ensure that the interests of minority employees are fully represented. In recent years there has, particular some US states, been an anti-EDI backlash, with organisations cancelling their EDI policies and some jurisdictions legislating against them.

EDI issues do not currently have such a controversial status in Wales, but the underlying principles do align with many of the stated positions of the Welsh Government, particularly in the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act. It therefore seems important to monitor the degree to which Welsh businesses are working to align themselves with EDI and associated values.

Regional Differences

As one might expect, businesses in urban South Wales (Cardiff, Swansea, the Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend) tend to show a higher engagement with EDI than companies in more rural regions, perhaps reflecting the former’s more diverse workforce and closeness to centres of government. It will be interesting to observe the degree to which the current scores shift over time, particularly in response to new legislation and electoral developments

One further point of interest is to examine these data alongside our metric of Political Diversity which shows that those counties where companies demonstrate a higher level of engagement with DEI issues are themselves counties with relatively higher levels of political diversity.

How to use this Metric

This metric works by scanning the text of company websites for content and themes associated with EDI principles and practices. The score is on a scale between 0 and 1. A higher score indicates that a company has dedicated more space and resources to discussing EDI issues through its digital presence. At the county level, the score represents the currency of EDI amongst the resident business population; this may, of course, have only a limited relation to the actual policies implemented by these companies.
