Context
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) describes a set of principles designed to promote ecological sustainability, fair employment practices and responsible governance amongst the business community. Over the past decade, ESG has become one of the most popular frameworks used by companies and investors to express their commitment to goals such as fighting climate change or promoting corporate transparency. However, there has recently been something of a backlash against ESG, particularly in the US investment community, with major institutions cancelling ESG commitments and resigning from partnerships and alliances.
ESG issues do not currently have such a controversial status in Wales, but the underlying principles do align with many of the stated positions of the Welsh Government, particularly in the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act. It therefore seems important to monitor the degree to which Welsh businesses are working to align themselves with ESG and associated values.
Regional Differences
Overall, the data reflects generally low levels of engagement with ESG issues on company websites across Wales, with relatively small variations from county to county. What divergences do exist may be explained by differences in the make-up of local business populations. Wrexham’s score, for instance, could be related to its relatively high proportion of manufacturing businesses, who may be more likely than others to include references to environmental policies on their websites.
In the months ahead, we’ll be diving deeper into the factors shaping Welsh businesses’s attitudes to ESG, as well as monitoring the data for emergent trends – so watch this space!

How to use this Metric
This metric works by scanning the text of company websites for content and themes associated with ESG principles and practices – for instance, environmental sustainability, net zero or fair employment. The score is on a scale between -1 and +1. A higher score indicates that a company has dedicated more space and resources to discussing ESG issues through its digital presence. At the county level, the score represents the currency of ESG among the resident business population; this may, of course, have only a limited relation to the actual policies implemented by these companies.
