How the metric works.
Our Political Diversity Metric compares two key dimensions in each constituency:
Political Offering
The diversity political offering voters can choose from.
Engagement
Reflecting how people participate in the election.
By analysing these elements, we aim to quantify the diversity of the political landscape.

What the data reveals.
Bigger Populations, Bigger Scores
Constituencies with larger populations tend to have more candidates, which helps to score higher on political diversity.
Rural Outliers
In some rural areas, where the same candidates often run election after election, diversity scores remain notably low.
Room for Growth
Across Wales, most constituencies score relatively low on our scale, highlighting significant potential for greater political diversity.
Looking ahead
We’ll be tracking this metric as the election draws nearer, offering insights during the build-up and after the votes are counted. Beyond reflecting the current state of politics, the metric also provides a predictive lens, helping us anticipate trends based on historical patterns and demographic shifts.
Stay tuned—we’ll be doing a deep dive before the Welsh elections in 2025, and will update with fresh data after!
