Context
In the year 2025, every business is a digital business. This is to say, whether or not the sell a digital product or service, they rely on digital tools to produce, market and deliver their offerings.
How companies manage and maintain their digital estate is therefore crucial to their productivity and sustainability. This is not a simple process to measure, but our Digital Maturity metric provides a useful proxy. By monitoring the sophistication of a company’s digital presence, we gain an insight into the degree to which they are in line with digital usage trends in their region and sector, and to what extent they are seeking to exploit the latest technological innovations.
Regional Differences
Average Digital Maturity Scores show a marked rural/urban divide, although it is worth noting the relatively high scores of Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. In our previous research, the Digital Maturity metric has proven capable of detecting the effects of digitalisation initiatives on beneficiaries, so please reach out if you know of a programme you’d like us to evaluate.

How to use this Metric
Digital Maturity is a measure of the sophistication of a company’s web presence, based on over 30 different variables including the presence of video, social media links, e-commerce and chatbots. It is a reflection of how engaged the company in question is with the latest developments in digital communications technology, and as such serves as proxy for digital maturity in general.
Digital Maturity is based on a continuous scale, meaning there’s no upper limit. For individual companies, the best scores tend to be 70 or higher; at county level, the highest average scores we’ve measured have been around 30. The best way to interpret Digital Maturity is to see how a company (or group of companies) is doing relative to its peers, as there are some sectors where maintaining a sophisticated digital presence is more important than others.
